Frequently asked questions

Why should I take out a funeral plan?

A funeral plan enables you to protect your loved ones against rising funeral costs. It also removes some of the stress at a difficult time when you have just lost your loved one. We cannot take away the pain you will feel at that time, but we can deal with the arrangements which can be challenging and unfamiliar, especially in a foreign country.

Do I have to pass a medical examination?

No, customers purchasing a Practical Funeral Planning plan are not required to pass any medical tests, unlike many insurance products which will be rated and expensive, especially if you are older or have any underlying medical conditions.

Do you cater for burial or just cremation?

Practical Funeral Planning cover cremation only. However, all plans can be tailored for burial, although the customer will need to pay the additional costs including the purchase of a burial plot.

Can the plan be transferred from one person to another?

Our Funeral Plans can be transferred into the name of another person. To do so, the plan purchaser needs to contact Practical Funeral Planning directly, who will then make the necessary changes to your plan.

Can I cancel my plan?

Yes. There is a 14-day grace period to cancel your plan free of charge. Should you wish to cancel your plan after this cooling-off period, you will receive a refund of all monies paid less a cancellation fee of 495€.

Is it really necessary to pre-plan my funeral?

We believe it is essential for expatriates. The combination of strict regulations, red tape, and the language barrier means that pre-planning is the only way to ensure your family is spared the considerable distress of organising everything at a traumatic time.

Do I need a will?

For expatriates with property or assets overseas, with different legal systems, it’s essential to have a correct and locally compatible Will. This way, you can avoid leaving your loved ones with a lengthy and expensive legal succession process, and confusion as to your intentions. Also, valuable tax savings can be achieved with proper documentation.

What will the amount paid for my Plan be used for?

The amounts paid by the client, in the form of deposit or lump sum, and, if applicable, by means of monthly payments, shall be applied, by express mandate of the client, to the future payment, in the name of the client,  of provision by third parties of the funeral services included in said Plan, as well as future expenses in concept of mediation commission in favor of this Company.

Will I pay anything more at the time of the funeral?

If the plan is fully paid and your funeral is carried out by our nominated Funeral Director, there will be nothing further to pay for any of the services.

At the time of your death, the funeral director raises an invoice in your name, which we pay on your behalf.  This includes all costs and taxes associated with your funeral and the registration of death, death certificates, urn etc.

Bear in mind this does not cover the cost of a wake or any celebration after the funeral.

Are we regulated by the FCA?
